Dominican Republic Bachata
Interesting tidbits...
*Luis Vargas dies in car crash! Imagine how Luis felt when he heard this news himself in 1997. What is a person to do when the world says he is dead and he is still alive and well? Vargas wrote a bachata about it.

*You can see Luis first guitar on display in his restaurant in Santiago

*There is a movie about Vargas life called Santo Domingo Blues (2007). You can purchase this at Amazon.com

They have a fresh and different style of Bachata. The group is originally from New York. Formed in 2005, proving their musical style as being what people want to hear, they have already recorded their first album "The Hustleheartz".

Vocalist and composer and lead singer Valentin Mesa, has worked as back-up vocalist and composer for top artists in salsa & Latin-Pop. Mesa has an educated background in vocals and piano which adds a little extra flavor
to the typical Bachata sound. He adds smooth and refreshing lead vocals by adapting techniques and adding uniqueness to their fusion-bachata blend.

Eddie Rivera is the music director and lead guitarist. Born in New York of Dominican and Puerto Rican parents, this young New Yorker blends music of classical and modern styles of Bachata.  He like Valentin has a strong background in music and played a key role in arranging songs in this first album.

Edwin Arredondo is the lead chorus and second vocalist of the group. His voice adds a sweet and calmed sound that blends smoothly with Valentin's voice. Edwin is the lead singer in the song "A Pesar" featured in this first album.

Their first single "No Es" is a balance between classical and modern Bachata, which gives the genra a new and refreshing sound. The songs in the album have a similar style but each integrates different ideas and fusions to form a smooth blend between classical and modern. Henry Santos, singer and composer from Grupo Aventura produced the album.

Later as he started playing bachata music (it was not a popular style when he first started playing music) he was dubbed with the nickname Jefe Supremo de la Bachata. Later he got his nickname that stuck, Rey Supremo de la Bachata and The Supreme King of Bitterness (Nicknames are very common to bachateros here in Dominican Republic. Almost all bachateros have one).

Luis style developed over time. At first copying other musicians and finally finding his own little niche. His style is all his own with his unique baritone vocals. As with his lyrics they are all his own also. He gets his songs from everyday things that happen to him. Sometimes something may come to him in a dream or from something he hears or sees or loves gained and lost. Like all bacheteros, they write about their own life experiences.

Luis has been recording music in 1982 but his real popularity came in the late 1980's with the release of his album "La maravilla".

Luis Vargas in concert 2-05. Thanks US Latino for the picture.
Luis Vargas was born in La Linea a small providence of Montecristi in the northeastern side of Dominican Republic. Coming form a poor family with 12 brothers and sisters he is the only child that decided to play music. When he was 9 years old he sang in school. His teacher realized his singing potential and always placed him in the front row.

He always bugged his family to buy him a guitar but they were poor and didn't have the money for this. One day his mother won some money playing the numbers and bought Luis his first guitar. He had no idea how to play so he just kept trying. One day he met Luis Acosta and he showed Luis a few chords and he just kept going. Creating hs own style mostly playing romantic music and serenades.
