Ladrones A Domicilio (translated Robbers of the House), title in English - Robbers on Demand ( August 2008)

I would consider this movie to be a slap stick type comedy with lots of political satire included. It is so Dominican Republic typical that its funny and sad at the same time. It shows a comedic view of a situation that too often happens here in real life.
The story is mainly about a man named Bruno who is trying to send his daughter to college and he doesn't have the money. His regular job as a university professor doesn't make it so he takes a job as security for a late night money delivery van. The owner of the business sets up a robbery to steel the money in the van but the robbery goes wrong. This is where the movie gets a little crazy. The robbers kidnap the son of the business owner, there is a scene where there is a planned trip to Puerto Rica in a yola. The film ends with the money being shared between a senator, judge, general, chief of police and the security company owner.

The movie does get a bit confusing and is a little over the top at times. If you do not know the Dominican Republic you may not appreciate this film, but if you know anything about the country and its workings you will enjoy this film. The director shows his opinions of the corruption in this country in a most entertaining way.

Sugar - A Baseball Story and also a true immigration story as well. This is a very different film that takes place in the world of Dominican baseball players who follow their dream to come to the United States and be professional players most likely doing so to help their families back home. It is about Miguel "Sugar" Santos, 19 years old, who was discovered because of his pitching skills and famous curve ball. From a small village near San Pedro de Macorís, he was recruited to the Minor Leagues and whisked off to Iowa. He left friends and family with his first time on a plane and in a hotel room. Trying to play hard and also trying to fit in, learning a new language and culture, took it's toll. While  his playing goes down hill and he realizes the single-mindedness of his dreams and goals.  He ends up in New York to follow another kind of American dream. Sugar will appeal to both fans and non-fans of baseball. It is a sadly sweet movie that shows the hard truth for so many baseball player hopefuls in Dominican Republic.

The lead actor Algenis Perez Soto was playing baseball in park when he was discovered. The film makers wanted someone to act and play baseball but there were no real Dominican actors like this. They found Algenis who was so expressive  and natural in front of the camera without doing anything. Lets hope he keeps acting.
