This name is the Taino word Quisqueya, meaning "Land of which there is none better". Once you see the island, the highest peak in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte to Lake Enriquillo (Lago Enriquillo), which is below sea level. Then you will understand why the Taino, Columbus, and so many others that have discovered the beauty of this land, fell in love with this island.
Hiking and Trekking
The best places for trekking are Jarabacoa, the Constanza Valley, and the Nuevo Valley. Hiking and climbing enthusiasts can try and climb the Caribbean's highest mountain, Pico Duarte, which is (3210 meters) 10,700 feet. This beautiful mountain can be accessed either on foot or by riding a mule. There are also similar tours that can be had at El Mogote, Mount Isabel de Torres, Pico Yaque and Sierra de Bahoruco.
